Reclaimed Creations builds fireplace mantels from old growth beams pulled out of barns and mills across the Northeast. We have been doing it since 2014, and we have finished more than 750 mantels in that time. Every one is cut, sanded, and finished at our yard in Hopewell Junction, New York.

Hand-Hewn Mantels

Hand-hewn beams were shaped with an axe and an adze, usually a hundred years ago or more. The tool marks are still in the face. No two are close to identical, and the surface catches light in a way milled lumber never does.

  • Axe and adze marks left intact across the face
  • Kiln-dried and surface-washed before finishing
  • Oak, Eastern White Pine, and Eastern Hemlock, depending on what we have pulled
  • Cut to your length, height, and depth

Rough Sawn Mantels

Rough sawn beams came out of a mill instead of off an axe. The circular blade left arcing marks across the face, and those marks are the whole look. Cleaner than hand-hewn, still nothing like new lumber.

  • Circular saw marks from century-old mill blades
  • Natural checking, notch pockets, and weathered grain
  • Squares up cleanly for a more finished installation
  • Cut to your length, height, and depth

What a Mantel Costs

We price by the foot and we will tell you the number on the phone.

That price includes sanding and the finish of your choice. Freight is quoted separately based on your zip code.

This is an estimate for a straight cut at standard depth. Anything beyond that, we will price on the phone once we have your measurements.

Both prices include the finish. A five-foot in-stock mantel is $495, sanded, finished, and ready to hang. There is no separate charge for staining or sealing, and there is no design fee.

How We Build Yours

  • Send us your fireplace width, along with the length, height, and depth you want. A photo of the opening helps more than measurements alone.
  • Pick a beam. You can work from what is in stock or have one cut from a raw beam in the yard.
  • Choose the finish. Natural, clear coat, or a custom stain matched to what you send us.
  • We cut, sand, and finish it, then ship it or hold it for pickup.

Most orders are ready within two weeks. If you need one faster, call and ask. Sometimes we can work around it.

Come Look at the Wood

Photos only get you so far with reclaimed material. The color shifts depending on the light, and the texture is something you have to run a hand over. Our yard is at 40 Railroad Ave in Hopewell Junction, and you are welcome to come pick a beam yourself.

Yard hours are Tuesday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Saturday morning until noon. Call ahead so someone is there to walk the racks with you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Reclaimed Fireplace Mantels

Can I get a mantel cut to a specific size?+

Yes. Tell us the length, height, and depth and we will cut to it. Most customers send a photo of the fireplace along with the opening width, which is usually enough for us to recommend a size that looks right.

What is the difference between hand-hewn and rough sawn?+

Hand-hewn beams were shaped by hand with an axe, so the face is uneven and the tool marks are deep. Rough sawn beams were cut in a mill, so the face carries arcing circular saw marks and sits flatter. Hand-hewn reads older and more rustic. Rough sawn reads cleaner.

Is reclaimed wood safe to put over a working fireplace?+

Our mantels are kiln-dried and surface-washed, which kills anything living in the wood and brings the moisture content down. Clearance from the firebox is set by your local code and by the manufacturer of your insert or stove. Check both before you mount anything.

Do you ship outside New York?+

We deliver throughout New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, and we ship mantels nationwide. Freight cost depends on size and distance, so call with your zip code and we will price it.

How do I take care of it?+

Dust it. That is most of the job. If the finish dulls after a few years, a coat of paste wax brings it back. Do not use household cleaners or anything with ammonia on a reclaimed face.

Where does the wood actually come from?+

Barns, mills, and factory buildings across the Northeast, most of them built between the 1700s and the early 1900s. When we take a barn down we know where the material came from, and we can usually tell you the county and the approximate age of the beam you are buying.

Mantel Styles in the Yard

Send us your fireplace measurements and we will tell you what it costs, usually the same business day. If you would rather see the wood first, the yard is open Tuesday through Saturday by appointment. Call (845) 232-8943.
