Why Red Oak

Red oak reads warmer than white oak. There is a pink to red undertone in the heartwood and the grain is open, so the pattern in the face is more prominent and the floor looks livelier across a large room.

It is the more common of the two oaks in old American buildings, which is part of why a red oak floor tends to sit naturally in an older house. It is marginally softer than white oak and marginally less resistant to moisture. In a normal room, neither difference is one you will notice underfoot.

What Grade A Looks Like

Color variation, cracks, weather lines, and knot holes are all present, because the board came off a fence line or out of a building. There is less of it than in grade B and the range across a pack is tighter.

On red oak that tighter range matters more than it does on white oak, because the pink undertone reacts unevenly to weathering. Grade A keeps that swing controlled.

Matching an Older House

If you are laying reclaimed next to original red oak that is already in the house, grade A is the closer starting point. It will not match board for board, since nothing weathered outdoors for fifty years matches something that spent that time under a rug.

Most people run the reclaimed as its own room, or use a threshold to make the transition deliberate rather than trying to blend it.

The floor ships unfinished. Sanding and finishing are done on site after installation.

Ordering and Lead Time

This is a special order product. We do not carry it in the yard. Tell us the square footage, the width, and the grade, and we will quote the floor and the freight in one number.

Allow two to three weeks from the day the order goes in. Minimum order is 500 square feet, and you should add 10 to 15 percent above your measured square footage for waste.

Orders under 1,000 square feet carry a small order charge, quoted with your order.

You are welcome to pick up at our yard in Hopewell Junction at no charge, or we will quote delivery to your site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is red oak a good choice for a busy room?+

It holds up fine. Red oak has been the standard American floor for a century, most of it in houses with children and dogs. White oak is slightly harder, but the gap is small enough that appearance should decide it rather than durability.

Will the pink undertone show through a dark stain?+

Sometimes, and it is worth planning for. Red oak’s open grain absorbs stain unevenly and the warm undertone can telegraph through cool or gray finishes. Have your installer test on offcut from your own pack.

Does it come finished?+

No. It ships unfinished, with no stain and no sealer applied.

Can I match it to an existing red oak floor?+

Close, not exact. Reclaimed board weathered for decades and no new or refinished floor will match it board for board.

What is the widest board you offer?+

Five inches, and it is offered in red oak only. White oak stops at 4.5 inches. If you need wider than that, call and ask, because it is worth checking against current stock.
