Cut by Circular Saw

Rough sawn beams were cut by circular saw, which is where their distinctive saw markings come from. The blade left arcing marks across the face, and those marks are the whole look. You will also hear them called circular sawn beams.

Rough sawn beams are typically reclaimed from 19th- and early 20th-century barns, mills, and factories, often in oak, pine, or Douglas fir.

We hand select each one for quality. They come from barns all over the Northeast, and sometimes from farther across the United States.

Finish Options

You can order a rough sawn beam three ways:

✦In the rough, just as it came out of the barn
✦Cleaned, with the dirt, debris, and mud removed
✦Cleaned and color corrected, brushed back to its original brown

Color correction works the surface with different levels of nylon brushes. It brings back the original brown without losing the saw marks or the character and surface defects that make each beam unique. See all three finishes on the reclaimed wood beams page.

Sizes

Rough sawn beams square up cleanly, which suits a more finished installation, and we can cut them to your project's length and width. Our rough sawn fireplace mantels are cut from the same kind of beam.

Rough Sawn or Hand-Hewn?

For deeper tool marks and an uneven face, look at our reclaimed hand-hewn beams. When a beam only needs to look the part, a hollow wood box beam is a much lighter option.
