What Rustic Grade Means Here

Rustic is a lumber grade. It means the board was allowed to keep the knots, mineral streak, and grain variation that a clear grade would have cut out.

So you get real interest in the face while the color stays in a controlled range. It sits between a plain painted beam and the weathered hemlock.

Why White Oak

Oak is heavy, hard, and it holds a straight edge, which is what you want on a lock mitered corner. The joint stays tight and the face stays flat.

The color sits in the tan to light brown range and it deepens rather than graying as it ages indoors. White oak also takes stain evenly, so a color choice lands where you expect it to.

Where It Fits

Rooms where you want the weight and color of oak overhead with a clean surface. Kitchens with new cabinetry, finished basements, and any space where the rest of the millwork is crisp and a heavily weathered beam would sit awkwardly.

If you want texture in the face, the circle sawn version of the same oak keeps blade marks in the surface. If you want a weathered face, the reclaimed hemlock is the one to look at.

Common profiles: 3 by 6 by 3, 6 by 6 by 6, and 8 by 8 by 8 inches. Any custom size can be built.

The three numbers in a profile are the three exposed faces. A 6 by 6 by 6 beam shows 6 inches down each side and 6 inches across the bottom.

Beams longer than 16 feet are seamed. A single continuous board is rarely available at that length, so the face is joined. The seams are tight and read as part of the beam, but you should expect them.

Ordering and Lead Time

Every beam is built to order. Nothing sits in stock, which is the reason for the two to three week lead time.

Minimum order is four beams.

Yes. White oak’s closed grain takes stain evenly, so it goes dark cleanly without blotching the way some species do.
