Reclaimed Creations supplies three sided wood box beams in reclaimed hemlock, rustic white oak, and rustic white pine. They are hollow, so they weigh a fraction of what a solid timber weighs and they mount over a ledger board rather than carrying any load. Every beam is built to order in any size you need. Lead time is two to three weeks.

What a Box Beam Is

A box beam is three boards milled and glued into a U. Two sides and a bottom, hollow through the middle. From the floor it looks like a solid timber.

It weighs a fraction of one, it costs less, and it goes up over a ledger board screwed into the ceiling instead of needing structure to carry it. The hollow center is useful on its own, because wiring, conduit, and sprinkler line all disappear inside a box beam.

Lock Mitered Corners

The edges are milled with a lock miter, an interlocking L shaped joint that pulls the two faces together at a true ninety degrees and leaves almost no visible seam at the corner.

It is a harder joint to cut than a plain miter and it holds tight as the wood moves, instead of opening at the corner the way a glued butt joint does.

The Four Options

Four options that run from a heavily weathered face through to clean and knotty. Every one is kiln dried, lock mitered, and built to your dimensions.

Sizes and Lengths

Standard lengths are 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20 feet.

Beams longer than 16 feet are seamed. A single continuous board is rarely available at that length, so the face is joined. The seams are tight and read as part of the beam, but you should expect them.

The three numbers in a profile are the three exposed faces. A 6 by 6 by 6 beam shows 6 inches down each side and 6 inches across the bottom. A 3 by 6 by 3 shows 3 inches on the sides with a 6 inch face underneath, which suits a lower ceiling where a full square beam would crowd the room.

We can build any custom size. Every beam is made to order regardless, so a non standard dimension costs you nothing in lead time.

Box Beams or Solid Beams

We also carry solid hand hewn and rough sawn beams in the yard, pulled out of barns across the Northeast. Those are a different product with a different install.

Choose a box beam when the beam is decorative, when weight or ceiling structure is a concern, when you need to hide a run of wiring, or when you want a matched set at consistent dimensions across a whole ceiling.

Choose a solid reclaimed beam when you want genuine age in the wood, when you want the axe marks and the mortise pockets, and when you have the structure to carry the weight.

How Ordering Works

Every box beam is built to order. Nothing sits in stock, which is why the lead time is two to three weeks rather than same day off a rack.

Minimum order is four beams.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wood Box Beams

Do the beams come finished?+

No. Every beam ships unfinished, with no stain and no sealer. Finishing is done on site, which lets you match the beam to whatever else is going into the room.

How does a box beam mount?+

A ledger board is fastened to the ceiling joists first, then the beam slides over it and is fastened from the sides. Because the beam is hollow and light, this is a two person job on most ceilings rather than a crane job.

Can I order a size that is not on the list?+

Yes. Standard runs 12 to 20 feet in two foot steps and the profiles listed are the common ones, but we build any custom size. Tell us what you need.

Is there a minimum order?+

Yes. Four beams. Because every beam is built to order and shipped from the mill, a smaller run does not work for us or for you.

Are long beams one continuous board?+

Up to 16 feet, yes. Past that the beam is seamed, because a single board of that length is rarely available in reclaimed or rustic grade stock. The joint is tight and it reads as part of the beam.

Can I pick it up myself?+

Yes, and there is no charge for it. The yard is at 40 Railroad Ave in Hopewell Junction. Call ahead so someone is there and the order is staged. Otherwise we will quote delivery to your site.

How is a box beam different from a solid beam?+

A box beam is hollow and decorative. A solid beam is a single timber and carries weight. The box beam is lighter, cheaper, easier to install, and can hide wiring. The solid beam is the real thing, with the age and tool marks that come with it.

Will multiple beams match each other?+

Closely, and more closely than solid reclaimed beams would. Order the full set at once so they come from the same run, because that is what keeps color and character consistent across a ceiling.

We deliver through New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, and ship nationwide by freight. Long beams affect freight cost, so give us the length and your zip code.
