Every beam we sell is hand selected for quality. They come from barns all over the Northeast, and sometimes from farther across the United States. We carry two kinds of solid reclaimed beam, hand-hewn and rough sawn, and the difference comes down to how each one was shaped in the first place.
Hand-hewn beams were shaped by axe, and that is where the hewn markings on their faces come from. The surface is uneven and no two beams are marked the same way.
Rough sawn beams were cut by circular saw, which left the distinctive arcing saw marks across the face. They sit flatter and square up more cleanly than a hewn beam.

Every beam comes in one of three finishes.
A hand-hewn or rough sawn beam is a solid timber, salvaged whole. It carries weight and it needs real structure behind it. When a beam is there for the look rather than the load, a wood box beam does that job instead. It is three boards milled into a hollow U and lock mitered at the corners, so it goes up over a ledger board screwed into the ceiling, weighs a fraction of a solid timber, and hides a run of wiring down the middle. Both are built to your dimensions.

Yes. We can customize reclaimed beams to your project's dimensions, including length and width. Each beam comes in the rough, cleaned, or cleaned and color corrected.
Reclaimed wood beams are salvaged from old buildings like barns and factories, and many are over a century old. They have weathering, nail holes, and tool marks that new wood does not. Years of natural seasoning also make them more stable and stronger than new wood, and choosing reclaimed reduces the need for new timber.
Reclaimed wood beams need very little upkeep. Dust interior beams regularly and wipe them with a damp cloth. Exterior beams should be resealed periodically to protect them from the weather, and a protective finish helps in high-moisture areas. For product recommendations, contact our team.
