Reclaimed Red Oak Flooring in Grade B

Call (845) 232-8943

Grade B is our rougher red oak. Less refined than grade A, with more texture, deeper weather lines, and the widest color range of anything in the line. Reclaimed, special order, supplied unfinished. Two to three weeks.

The Widest Color Range We Carry

Red oak weathers unevenly. The pink undertone in the heartwood reacts to sun and rain differently from the paler sapwood, so a weathered red oak board can carry two or three distinct tones down its length.

Multiply that across a grade B pack and you get the broadest color range of any floor we supply. Pale gray through rust through deep brown, sometimes on adjacent boards. People either want exactly that or they do not.

Texture and Character

Deeper weather lines than grade A, more checking, and more knot holes. The face carries visible history rather than a hint of it.

Because red oak has open grain to begin with, the weathering settles into the pore structure and the texture reads deeper than the same grade in white oak does.

Sizing the Room to the Floor

A grade B red oak floor is a strong element in a room. In a large space with plenty of light it becomes the character of the room and everything else can stay quiet.

In a small or dark room it can close things in. If that is the situation, reclaimed red oak flooring in grade A gives you the same warmth with a tighter range, and it is the safer choice.

Ordering and Lead Time

This is a special order product. We do not carry it in the yard. Tell us the square footage, the width, and the grade, and we will quote the floor and the freight in one number.

Allow two to three weeks from the day the order goes in. Minimum order is 500 square feet, and you should add 10 to 15 percent above your measured square footage for waste.

Orders under 1,000 square feet carry a small order charge, quoted with your order.

You are welcome to pick up at our yard in Hopewell Junction at no charge, or we will quote delivery to your site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the color range wider in red oak than white oak?+

Red oak’s pink undertone weathers differently from its paler sapwood, so a single board can carry several tones. White oak weathers to gray more uniformly.

Is grade B lower quality?+

No. Same kiln drying, same grading process, same milling specification. The grade describes character, not construction.

Does it come finished?+

No. It ships unfinished. Sanding and finishing happen on site after the floor is laid.

Should I stain it to even out the color?+

You can, but stain will not close a range this wide and a dark stain fights the warm undertone. Most people who buy grade B red oak want the variation and use a clear finish over it.

Can I see a pack first?+

Worth doing with this one. The color range across a pack is the whole decision and it does not photograph. Call ahead and come to the yard.
