Hand-hewn beams were shaped by axe, and that is where the hewn markings come from. The face is uneven, the tool marks run deep, and no two beams carry the same pattern.
These beams are typically reclaimed from pre-1900 barns, farmhouses, and other historic buildings. The wood is often a dense, durable species like oak, chestnut, or hickory.
Every one is hand selected for quality, from barns all over the Northeast and sometimes farther across the United States.

Color correction works the surface with different levels of nylon brushes to bring back the original brown, and it keeps the axe marks, the character, and the surface defects that make each beam unique. The reclaimed wood beams page covers all three finishes in more detail.
