Decorative Ceiling Beams Built to Order for Connecticut

Reclaimed Creations builds wood box beams for Connecticut ceilings. These are hollow, decorative ceiling beams, sometimes called faux beams, made from two sides and a bottom that pass for a solid timber when you look up. The standard lengths run 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20 feet, and we will build to any custom size. Each order takes two to three weeks, and you need at least four beams. You can have them delivered or shipped by freight, or pick them up free at our Hopewell Junction yard, where you can also see samples. Visits are by appointment only.

See It In Person

Matching the Face to the Room

Start with how much age you want overhead. Reclaimed hemlock shows the most. It was salvaged from mushroom houses, long low growing buildings where it spent decades in steady humidity and little sunlight, and you can order it rough faced or circle sawn.

Rustic white oak is milled smooth, so its character comes from knots, mineral streak, and grain variation rather than weathering. Circle sawn white oak keeps the saw marks from the mill blade in its face. You get texture, and the color still holds to a narrow range.

Pine is worth a look if a dark beam would feel heavy in the room. Rustic white pine is knotty New England white pine with a circle sawn face, nearly cream when unfinished. Of the four it has the palest color, weighs the least, and is the easiest to work with on site.

Then check the ceiling height. A profile is named for the three faces you see, so a 6 by 6 by 6 has 6 inches on both sides and 6 across the bottom. Under a low ceiling, a 3 by 6 by 3 keeps the 6 inch bottom and cuts the sides to 3 inches, so the beam takes up less of the room.

Box beams are decorative and hold nothing up. For a single timber with real age in it, axe marks and mortise pockets included, see our solid reclaimed beams, hand hewn or rough sawn timbers pulled from barns across the Northeast. A solid beam carries weight, so the ceiling needs structure to hold it.

The photos below show a labeled sample of each face, five in all, because hemlock comes two ways.

How the Corners and Seams Are Made

Both long corners of every beam are lock mitered. The boards are cut to hook into each other, forming an L that pulls the faces square and leaves only a faint line where they meet. Wood moves, and a glued butt joint gaps when it does. The lock miter keeps its grip.

In the middle of the miter, a rounded finger on each board hooks into a pocket in the other, so the two boards cup around each other. The three boards leave the center of the beam hollow.Locking Miter JointHollow centerLock miterLock miter

A beam of 16 feet or less has a face cut from one board. Past 16 feet there is a seam in the face, because a single board that long rarely turns up in reclaimed or rustic grade. The joint is tight and blends into the beam. All four options are kiln dried and go out unfinished, with no stain or sealer, so you can finish them on site to suit the room.

Delivery and Pickup for Connecticut Orders

The yard is in Hopewell Junction at 40 Railroad Ave, in Dutchess County, New York, which shares a border with Connecticut. Once the beams are built, there are three ways to get them.

  • Delivery to your site. We deliver to Connecticut addresses, Greenwich included, and quote the delivery to your zip code.
  • Freight. We ship by freight nationwide, and that is quoted to your zip code too.
  • Pickup at the yard, free of charge. Hours are Tuesday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Saturday until noon, by appointment only, so call ahead and the order will be staged with someone there when you arrive.

Beam length changes the freight cost, so list every length along with your zip code and the quote will account for it.

Ordering From Connecticut

Quotes are handled by phone at (845) 232-8943 or through the contact form. We need the face you picked (for hemlock, rough or circle sawn), the profile, the length of each beam, how many beams, your zip code, and how you want them: delivery, freight, or pickup.

Order every beam for the room together, so the whole set is built in one run and the color and character stay consistent across the ceiling.

We build and supply box beams only. Installing them is up to you or your contractor, and a contractor running the job can call us with the sizes directly. Our main wood box beams page explains how the beams mount and how wiring can run through the hollow center.
