Sized From a Photo of Your Fireplace

You do not need to make the trip to get a mantel that fits. Most customers send a photo of the fireplace with the width of the opening, and that is usually enough for us to recommend a size that looks right.

  • ✦Send the photo and the opening width, plus the length, height, and depth you want if you already know them
  • ✦Choose hand-hewn or rough sawn
  • ✦Choose a finish: natural, clear coat, or a custom stain matched to what you send us
  • ✦We cut, sand, and finish it, and most orders are ready within two weeks
  • ✦We deliver it, with the cost based on the size of the mantel and the distance

Or Pick Your Beam in the Yard

If you would rather choose the wood in person, you are welcome at the yard. Reclaimed wood changes color with the light and the texture is easier to judge by hand, so it helps to see hand-hewn and rough sawn beams side by side.

The yard is at 40 Railroad Ave in Hopewell Junction, open Tuesday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Saturday until noon, by appointment only. Call ahead to set a time, so someone is there to walk the racks with you. When your mantel is ready, take it home or have it delivered.

Hand-Hewn Mantels

Hand-hewn beams were shaped with an axe and an adze, most of them a hundred years ago or more. The tool marks are still in the face, so the surface is uneven and every mantel is one of a kind.

  • ✦Axe and adze marks left intact
  • ✦Kiln-dried and surface-washed before finishing
  • ✦Oak, Eastern White Pine, or Eastern Hemlock, depending on what we have pulled
  • ✦Cut to your length, height, and depth

Rough Sawn Mantels

Rough sawn beams were cut at a mill. The circular blade left arcing marks across the face, and the beam sits flatter than hand-hewn, which gives a cleaner line over the fireplace.

  • ✦Circular saw marks from century-old mill blades
  • ✦Natural checking, notch pockets, and weathered grain
  • ✦Squares up cleanly for a more finished installation
  • ✦Cut to your length, height, and depth

That price includes sanding and the finish of your choice. Freight is quoted separately based on your zip code.

This is an estimate for a straight cut at standard depth. Anything beyond that, we will price on the phone once we have your measurements.

A five-foot in-stock mantel is $495, sanded, finished, and ready to hang, with no design fee and no separate charge for stain or sealer. Delivery in Connecticut depends on the size of the mantel and the distance, so call with your zip code and we will price it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Care and where the wood comes from are covered on the main reclaimed fireplace mantels page. Adding ceiling beams to the same house? See wood box beams in Connecticut.

Do you deliver mantels in Connecticut?+

Yes, throughout the state. The cost depends on the size of the mantel and how far it is going, so call with your zip code and we will price it.

Do I need to visit the yard?+

No. A photo of your fireplace with the opening width is usually enough for us to recommend a size. If you would rather see the beams first, you are welcome to come pick one yourself.

Can you match a stain to my room?+

Yes. Choose natural, clear coat, or a custom stain matched to what you send us. Every finish is included in the price.

Is a reclaimed mantel safe over a working fireplace?+

Our mantels are kiln-dried and surface-washed, which kills anything living in the wood and brings the moisture down. Your local code and the maker of your insert or stove decide how far the mantel has to sit from the firebox, so check both before you mount it.
