Our yard sits in Dutchess County, part of the Hudson Valley, at 40 Railroad Ave in Hopewell Junction. We build and supply three sided wood box beams in four options, each one made to your dimensions. A box beam is hollow. Looking up at it, you would take it for a solid timber, but it weighs a fraction as much and costs less. Lead time is two to three weeks, four beams is the minimum order, and pickup at the yard is free, by appointment only.
All four are kiln dried and lock mitered, and each one is built to the sizes you give us. What changes from one to the next is the face and the color.
The hemlock is salvaged from local mushroom houses, the long, low buildings where mushrooms are grown. The wood spent decades in them, damp the whole time and seeing very little sun, and that is where the weathering in its face comes from. Picking up at the yard costs nothing. The yard is open Tuesday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Saturday until noon, by appointment only. Call (845) 232-8943 before you drive over. That way someone is at the yard and your beams are staged when you arrive.
We keep box beam samples at the yard, so you can see them in person. Depending on inventory, we may have a few box beams in stock too, so reach out and ask when you call to set a time.
Put every beam for the ceiling on one order. That way the whole set comes out of a single run and stays consistent in color and character, and you have one order to collect instead of several.
A custom order is built once you place it, with a lead time of two to three weeks. A non standard size adds no time, because the beams are built to your dimensions either way.
Send the length of every beam when you order. Standard lengths are 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20 feet. A beam of 16 feet or less has no seam. Expect one past that, since a single board that long seldom turns up in reclaimed or rustic grade. It is a tight joint that reads as part of the beam. Before you come, check that your vehicle can carry the longest beam in the order.
If you would rather not haul the beams, we deliver to sites in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Beams also ship nationwide by freight. Both are quoted to your zip code, and the length of the beams changes what freight costs, so include the lengths too.

You or your contractor. We build and supply box beams and do not install them. The installer starts with a ledger board on the ceiling joists, then fits the beam over it and fastens it from the sides. A hollow beam is light, so most ceilings need two people for it, not a crane.
It depends on what the beam has to do. A box beam suits a beam that is there for looks, a ceiling where weight or structure is a concern, wiring you want out of sight, or a set that needs consistent dimensions. A solid reclaimed beam is a single timber that carries weight, with genuine age, axe marks, and mortise pockets, and it needs structure to hold it. Our solid beams are hand hewn or rough sawn, pulled out of barns across the Northeast.
